My answer will certainly not be unanimous, but I believe that complexion primers are not necessary in a beauty routine. My go-to skincare products are the @embryolisseca Lait Crème Concentré and @weleda Skin Food. I find that proper skin prep provides a better base than primers. Some primers can interfere with the foundation’s performance, especially if the textures or ingredients are not compatible (silicone-based primers with water-based foundations). We all had that situation where the foundation is pilling and we have to start over, nobody’s got time for this.🫠 I’ve always prefered to rely on layering techniques and setting products (I looove @urbandecaycosmetics All Nighter Setting Spray, @charlottetilbury Flawless Finish powder and @lauramercier Translucent powder) to ensure longevity and a flawless finish. I kind of view primers as a marketing-driven product, am I the only one?

Want bigger, brighter eyes with a lifted effect? It’s all about strategic eyeshadow placement and a few key liner tricks. By focusing on lighter shades in the center, contouring with neutral tones, and lifting the outer corner with a flick, you’ll be amazed at how much more open your eyes will look!

First, prime your lids. Start with a primer (I really love the prep+prime eye base from @maccosmeticscanada) to ensure your eyeshadow stays in place and colors pop.

Use lighter shades on the lid. Apply a light, shimmery shade (@charlottetilbury eyes to mesmerize cream eyeshadow shade champagne is my go to) on the center of the lid to make the eyes appear larger.

Contour with a neutral shade (@makeupbymario master mattes eyeshadow palettes are perfect for this). Apply a mid-tone matte shade to the crease, blending upward and outward to create the illusion of lifted eyes.

Focus on the outer corner. Use a darker shadow on the outer “V” to elongate the eyes. Blend toward the temples for that lifted effect.

Opt for a thin line along the upper lash line, slightly flicking it upward at the end for a subtle cat-eye. Skip the lower lash line or only line the outer third to avoid shrinking your eyes.

Apply a nude liner to your lower waterline to brighten and open up the eyes. (Best one @tartecosmetics Fake Awake eye highlight)

Focus your mascara on the outer lashes, and even use individual false lashes on the outer corners for a wide-eyed, lifted look.

1. Understand the lighting you’re working with.

Different lighting (natural light, studio lights, or harsh flash) can alter the perception of color. What looks subtle in natural light might appear washed out or too intense under studio lights. Knowing the lighting will help you adjust foundation, eyeshadow, and lipstick shades accordingly. Proper lighting helps define the areas where light naturally hits the face. Without knowing the lighting setup, contouring might be too strong or highlights too shiny. Also, bright lighting or flash photography can cause unwanted shine or flashback (a white cast from certain products, like heavy powder or SPF).

2. Ask your model what’s their skin type.

Knowing the skin type will help you select products that will last throughout the day without breaking down. For instance, oily skin needs products with more staying power, while dry skin benefits from moisture-rich products to prevent flaking.

3. Make sure you and your client are on the same page.

Miscommunication can lead to a makeup look that doesn’t fit the director’s vision, resulting in delays or the need for a reshoot. Clarifying expectations beforehand saves time and effort (and a lot of anxiety🫠!).
